David Ryan Ooi, age 14, went to be with his big brother Alex and Grandma Collins on July 20th, 2014 surrounded by his family.
Cherished son of Rena and Henry; brother to Sarah and Philip; nephew and godson of Ray; grandson of Jimmy; friend to all. He adored all animals and his many pets, especially, Bear and Maisie.
David had the kindest soul, the biggest heart, and the brightest smile. He embraced every moment of life, and never did anything halfway. He was passionate about sports and forever with a ball in hand and Red Sox cap on his head - always a Boston boy. He stayed selfless to the end with the most positive spirit, and never stopped trying to make the world a better place for everyone. He was happiest when he was skim boarding down a beach, making people laugh with his perfectly timed wit, and helping others, especially his new friends at Tusculum Elementary and Stonebrook Apartments.
A private celebration of his life for his friends, teammates and those who knew and loved him will be held at Unity Church of Nashville, 5125 Franklin Pike on Friday, July 25th at 2 p.m. Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Please wear bright, informal attire, as we celebrate the joy with which David lived.

Mr. and Mrs. Ooi,
I just found out about David and am so sorry to hear about this. I was one of David's baseball coaches when he was younger and he was always a favorite on the team. He was so polite and pleasant as he always thanked me and shook my hand after every practice and game. He was such a great young man. Prayers be with your family.

My daughter Hannah was in David's homeroom in 7th grade. We are so heartbroken to hear this news. Hannah shared that David was so kind and never drew attention to himself. His concern was always for others. He will be missed.

So saddened to hear this news. I really enjoyed having David in Life Skills classes at Edmondson Elementary. He was such a respectful, caring and kind boy. The type of student we wish they all could be! Sending prayers and hugs to the family.

I was just heartbroken to hear of David's passing. The memories I have of him with all his peers at Edmondson Elementary will stay with me forever. He was such a special, bright star in my 5th grade class. My superstar speller & friend to all!! We have a wonderful angel watching over us now.

I will miss David so much. He was an inspiration to my staff, all of his peers, and me because he faced his ailments and treatments with such courage and grace. He continued to show up and work as hard as he could, so much so that it is almost as if he refused to let you know that he was hurting. His positive attitude was contagious and will be remembered by all. His love of others and thoughtfulness to those in need will also be a legacy that no one will ever forget. I am grateful for his wonderful life and his example. I will miss seeing him in the hallways on the way to class or in the car line in the mornings. He is a blessing to all.

I only knew David for a short time, but he has made a big impact in my life. The very first time I met him, David walked up to me, looked me straight in the eye, and shook my hand as he introduced himself. He had come to volunteer, and not only would he do anything that was asked of him- he did it with a smile! In a world where teenagers are stereotyped as aloof and uncaring- David DID care. Even as his health was failing him, he wanted to do all he could to continue to serve others. Although I only knew him for a short time, David touched my life. I am honored to have known him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
