RIP IAN: As I stood in your room at the Rest Home while you lay sleeping on the Sunday before you passed Ian I recalled so many happy memories of our 33/34 years working years together. From 1964 we were co-workers employed by the previous Secretary then when you were appointed Secretary Manager of the Wanganui Jockey Club you and I moved together to base our office at the Racecourse on a new exciting venture. And exciting it was, many friends made from all over New Zealand and further afield, many milestones met and enjoyed by many and I feel very proud to have been there from your very first day until the disestablishment of both our jobs many years later. When we began there was no computer technology, just our pens, books and research and my trusty typewriter but your ability, expertise, knowledge, enthusiasm and genial personality and your love for racing and people made it work. So many good times and so many stories to tell. Thank you for your guidance and friendship over our years, not only to me but to my husband and various family members who also helped on racedays. Like me, I know you were devastated when our jobs ended. Rest peacefully my friend, a life well lived, always remembered.

Had not seen you in recent years, but some wonderful memories of your days at the helm of the Wanganui JC, at work or play. I was a racing journalist in those early days, but you became a mentor for me when I was secretary of the Feilding Jockey Club in the mid-eighties. We had many chats on the subject, face-to-face and over the phone. The top racing, along with the friendships made, and the fun enjoyed at Wanganui meetings back then will never be forgotten, especially those Queen's Birthday weekends...

Knowing Ian since the 70's his efficiency and hospitality made Wanganui the place where North met Central. So many visitors returning for every meeting ensured high quality fields and good racing.
Thank you for your company over the years and will always be remembered.

Rest In Peace my friend
