Howard W. Drake, of Cliffwood, NJ, died Monday, April 15, 2013 at Bayshore Community Hospital. He was 94 years old, born February 22, 1919 to the late George and Ruth Drake. Surviving is his wife, Pauline Robinson Drake; a son, Sidney Howard Drake; a granddaughter, Makeda Ayana Drake; two great granddaughters, Cydiera Tinae Drake and Lanaye Sharee Drake; a sister-in-law, Linda Ellerbe; two nieces, Maxine Hayes and Patia Aikens and a nephew, Maxwell Bryant.

Howard Drake was an associate member of Hadassah, a member of the Madison Township Historical Society and the Thomas Warne Museum of Old Bridge, African American Genealogy Society of N.J. and the Senior Citizen Club of Aberdeen. Howard Drake served in World War II from February 13, 1942 through December 2, 1945 receiving the European, African, and Middle Eastern ribbons and victory medals. He received an honorable discharge as a Sergeant with the 64th Medical Detachment. He was a medical technician in charge of a dispensary of the 1349th Engineers General Services Regiment in France and England during the second wave of the June 6, 1944 invasion. He worked for the Federal Government from 1945-1982. He was honored with a certificate of recognition for accumulating over 3221 hours of sick leave. In 1982, he worked at Coastal Building Maintenance Service and was named the 1985 employee of the year, and in 1990 received an outstanding performance certificate. In 1987 as a custodian, he was the October Buccaneer of the month at Red Bank Regional High school. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church since 1956. He served as a Sunday school teacher, trustee, and member of the usher board. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and serviced as Commander of the Keyport Post # 4247 from 1976 thru 1977. In 1983, he was the V.F.W. district 6 Environmental chairperson and in 1998 the Loyalty Day chairman of the Central area. He was a member of Butler Lodge #42 for 51 years. Past district 5 deputy, Worthy Patron of Rose of Sharon # 5+ O.E.S.; member of Royal Arch Masons, Knight Templars, Consistory, N.J. Ancient Arabic Order, Nobles of the Mystric Shrive, Mecca #1, Inspector General 33rd degree and Sean Squirrel # 10 Military Order of the Cooties or New Jersey.

A viewing will be held from 10:00 AM until noon on Saturday at Providence Baptist Church, Cliffwood, N.J. Fraternal services will commence at 10:00 AM. The Home Going service will begin immediately following the viewing at noon. Interment will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday at Brigadier General Wm. C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent in his name to the Providence Baptist Church Building Ministry, 49 Kennedy Ave., Cliffwood, N.J. 07721. Childs Funeral Home, Red Bank, is in charge of arrangements.
