AGE: 78 • Whiting

Melvin E. Carlough, 78, of Whiting, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, Feb. 10, 2014. Mel was born in Newark and raised in Bloomfield. Mel had lived most of his life in Point Pleasant Boro where he raised his family before moving to Whiting 12 years ago. Mel had spent his summers in Shore Acres since he was a child. He graduated from Montclair State College in 1959 with a degree in Education. Mel was a Physical Education teacher for the Brick Board of Education for over 38 years retiring in 1998. His summer job was lifeguarding as Captain at Jenkinson's, Bradshaw's and Bay Head Beaches. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed boating, fishing and hunting. Mel was a member of the NRA, volunteer firefighter for Point Pleasant Boro and played slow pitch softball in the summers for Gerard's Liquor Store. Mel was and always will be a lover of his many Labrador Retrievers.

Mel was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Catherine Finn; a sister, Claire Irvine; and his wife, Hope Carlough. He is survived by his four daughters, Debbie Carlough of Bradley Beach, Sharon Carlough of Brick, Tara Shea of Bayshore, NY and Shawn Carlough of Boynton Beach, FL. Mel is also survived by two grandchildren, Thomas Shea and Cortney Shea; two daughters-in-law, Robin DeFlice of Bradley Beach and Tracie Koss of Brick; his longtime companion, Susan Tylka of Allenwood, and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14 at Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15 at Presbyterian Church of Point Pleasant, 701 Forman Ave., Point Pleasant Beach. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle.
