Thomas H. Auch Obituary
Thomas H. Auch

Edison

We are sad to announce the passing of Thomas Henry Auch, of Edison, on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, a former longtime resident of Monmouth County and one of the founders of Brookdale Community College, Lincroft.

He was the proud son of the late Frederick and Beatrice (Higgins) Auch. Tom was born on June 26, 1931 in Detroit, MI. He grew up in Grosse Pointe Park and graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in 1949. Tom graduated from University of Michigan in 1954 with a BA in Business Administration and received a Masters in Business Administration from Farleigh Dickinson University in 1980. He served as an officer in the Navy from 1955 to 1958. After Tom's time in the Navy, he worked for IBM and then for Oakland Community College in Michigan.

In 1968, he was one of three college administrators hired to begin Brookdale Community College where he worked for 22 years and saw the college from its infancy to an important Monmouth County resource. Tom served as VP of Finance and Administration as well as Interim President on a number of occasions during his tenure at Brookdale. He was so committed to Brookdale that he even went as far as to share his knowledge by teaching a Labor Relations class as an adjunct professor.

Tom was a founding member of the WWII center at Brookdale, chairman of the New Jersey County College Business Officers Association, and an evaluator for Middle States Accreditation Association.

Tom was also Vice President at Montclair State University until he retired in 1996. He was instrumental in helping form other community colleges in the State of New Jersey as a respected consultant.

Tom was a loving father and inspired family and friends with his work ethic, sense of humor and love of play. He enjoyed singing and playing the ukulele and was a proud past member of the Grunyons singing group. He also enjoyed bridge, tennis and golf. Tom was a huge University of Michigan sports fan. Tom had a zest for life and always had a twinkle in his eye.

He is predeceased by his beloved companion, Joan K. Davidson; brother, Walter Auch (Patricia); sister, Betty Parr; and sister-in-law, Jean (Cotter) Auch. Tom is survived by his loving daughter, Julie Auch (Rick Brown) and her mother, Jean (Corbett) Auch; his brothers, G. William (Bill) Auch (Sue) and Fred Auch.

Family and friends are invited to gather at 10 a.m. Sunday, March 2 at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank, with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Brookdale Community College Foundation, 765 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft, NJ 07738 in his loving memory.
