Dr. Dorothy Wirtz Obituary
Wirtz, Dr. Dorothy
was born in Keokuk, Iowa in 1915. She obtained her BA from the University of Iowa, and an MA and a Ph.D from the University of Wisconsin. Her major was French; her minor, German. When Dorothy began her higher education at Culver Stockton College, she won the Vachel Lindsay prize in poetry. She has taught French language and literature at the University of Wisconsin, the University of Minnesota and Arizona State University. She began her full time teaching at the University of Minnesota teaching French to military police in WWII and stayed on for civilian courses. One summer she directed the French House in Madison and one summer she was one of one hundred teachers of French invited to France by the French Government. Dorothy has traveled to 64 countries and has published academic articles on French literature and poems in various magazines and anthologies. She was the first president of the Phoenix chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. When her parents took her brother Warren, also a poet, to Arizona for his health, Dorothy joined them and entered politics, becoming Deputy State Treasurer of Arizona. Sputnik made foreign languages important again, and she began teaching at Arizona State. In her retirement, Dorothy led a poetry writing workshop at her Yucca Branch Library in Phoenix for twelve years. Dorothy has exhibited artwork in Paris and Jerome, Arizona. There will be a private burial for Dorothy followed by a remembrance gathering of her friends at Hansen Mortuary, 8314 N. 7th St, Phoenix, on July 14th from 4:00-6:00 pm. Donations in Dorothy's name may be sent to Prime Care Hospice, 4225 W. Glendale, Arizona, 85019.
