Boyd Fredrick Callies, 82, of Howard, South Dakota, died Sunday, April 13, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society, Howard, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 11am, Thursday, April 17, 2014 at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Howard, with burial and military rites at St. Johns Lutheran Church Cemetery, Howard. Visitation will begin Wednesday at 10am with a Prayer service at 7pm, at the Willoughby Funeral Home, Howard. Boyd Fredrick Callies was born September 9, 1931 on a farmstead northwest of Howard, Miner County, South Dakota to Albert and Ruth (Genzlinger) Callies. Boyd attended Sherman country school until the fifth grade and attended the Genzlinger country school southeast of Howard and later attended and graduated from Howard High School. During his high school years he was active in sports and 4-H. After high school he worked on the family farm and in 1952 was drafted into the military, servicing with the Marine Corp. during the Korean Conflict. In 1952, Boyd was married to Barb Burke at Pipestone, Minnesota. After being honorably discharged from military duties, Boyd returned to the Howard area. Boyd then started working as a butcher for Super Value Stores in the area for numerous years. In later years Boyd would bartend and repair pinball machines, jukeboxes, and tinkered with anything. Boyd enjoyed going to his children's activities, hunting pheasant, deer, fishing and made a trip to Wisconsin to hunt bear. Boyd was always an active person being a member to St. John's Lutheran Church, Howard American Legion, VFW and serving as the secretary for the Miner County Sportsmen's Club. Boyd admired his children and especially the grandchildren, whom he dearly loved. Those grateful for having shared a part of his life include his children: Chuck (Carla) Callies of LaCrosse, WI; Tim Callies of Long Beach, CA; Larry Callies of Bullhead City, AZ; and Brenda Johnson of Sioux Falls, SD; his six grandchildren; a great granddaughter; a brother: Eugene (Dorothy) Callies of Howard, SD; and two sisters: LeAnn (Jim) Kvernes of Sioux Falls, SD; Sharon (Chuck) McCarthy of Sioux Falls, SD. Boyd was preceded in death by his parents, a brother: Wayne, and a sister: LaVonne Becker.
