Dr. Gaylord Stanley

Gaylord Stanley "Stan", retired chiropractor, passed away March 8, at his home in Sioux Falls. Services will be held Wed. at 10:00 at Southern Hills Methodist church in Sioux Falls. Visitation will begin at 2:00 pm Tuesday at Heritage Funeral Home with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 pm

Stan was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Nov. 1, 1929 to Henry and Rose Stanley. He grew up on a dairy farm near Humbird, WI and attended high school at Alma Center. He worked various jobs when he was young, including at a canning factory, a Fisher Body for Chevrolet factory, and for a carnival. He married Patsy Rush in 1954 at Black River Falls, WI. A few years later they moved to Minneapolis where he attended chiropractic school at Northwestern University. Their daughter, Karen, was born there. In the fall of 1958, the family moved to Beresford, SD where Dr. Stanley began his career and set up a practice. A son, Mark, and daughter, Marsha were born soon after the move to SD. In 1970, the family moved to Marion, SD where Stan joined the Tieszen Clinic. Stan served on the school board in both Beresford and Marion, taught Sunday school in Beresford, and was involved in both communities. In 1982, Stan and Patsy divorced and both moved to Sioux Falls.

Stan was always a people person who loved his family and his friends and enjoyed nearly everyone he met or encountered. He visited with his "coffee friends" every day for many years. He faithfully worked out at the Sanford Wellness Center since it first opened in the 1980s until the last few days of his life. He enjoyed meeting people and getting to know them and it was his nature to find something they had in common. He also enjoyed his life and his friends at his retirement community where he grew beautiful roses, helped with the maintenance duties, and socialized with the other residents. Stan was a member of Southern Hills Methodist church in Sioux Falls.

Stan spent his life hunting with his son and other hunting buddies, and enjoyed fishing when he got the chance. He took many road trips with his girlfriend, Sheila and other family and friends. We will miss his wit, humor, endless stories, helpful ways, and most of all his unconditional love.

Stan was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Fern Ness, a brother, Williard Stanley, grandson, Eric Scarborough, his longtime girlfriend, Sheila Lund. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Karen (Steve) Scarborough, son, Mark (Judith) Stanley, daughter Marsha (Ross) Huntington, close friends, Patsy Flansburg and Hugh Scarborough, grandchildren, Joel Scarborough, Justin "Roy" Scarborough (Alexis Guccione), Amber (Shane Verel) Huntington and Logan Huntington, and step granddaughter, Rachel Josephsen, sister, Violet Schmitz, cherished nieces and nephews, and many friends.
