Jennie G. Kirk

Jennie G. Kirk passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 1, 2013, In Sioux Falls, SD. The family will greet friends from 5:00 - 7:00 pm followed by a Celebration of Life service at 7:30 pm, Saturday, December 7, at Miller Funeral Home, 13th and Main Avenue. A private family committal service will take place at Hills of Rest Memorial Park.

Jennie Georgantones was born March 8, 1928, to Peter and Catherine Georgantones in St. Paul, MN. Jennie grew up in St. Paul, where she received her education, graduating from Mechanic Arts High School in 1945. She attended the University of Minnesota for two years, where she worked toward an Associate of Arts degree, then worked at the State Capitol in Minnesota until her marriage. Jennie enjoyed world travels, swing dancing, symphonic music, films featuring Deanna Durbin, as well as professional voice training. A prolific writer, speaker and translator of Greek, she was tutored in childhood by a professor from the University of Minnesota who said, "You speak Greek the way the British speak English. Bravo!" Jennie also taught mini-courses in conversational Greek at Sioux Falls College.

Jennie was united in marriage with Lawrence C. Kirk on November 9, 1952, in St. Paul, MN. Following their marriage, the couple settled in Sioux Falls. A member of the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, she directed the church's Byzantine choir for 48 years. She also served as a District Officer for the Daughters of Penelope, was on the Minnehaha County Central Committee, served as a President of the Republican Women's of South Dakota, and was a National Delegate for the Republican Women's Club in the late 1960's. Jennie was also a member of the Eastern Star and the Sioux Vocational Services Auxiliary. She was employed by the South Dakota State Board of Nursing for fifteen years until her retirement.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Peter Kirk, of Sioux Falls, SD, Kathryn Kirk-Malters and her husband, Dr. Joseph Malters, of Rolla, MO, Connie Kirk and her fiance, Dr. Kalman C. Toth, of Portland, OR, her sister, Stella Lake, and her brother, Chris Georgantones, both of St. Paul, MN. Jennie was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Lawrence C. Kirk, her parents, and sister Mary Boosalis.

Memorials may be directed to the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, or the John & Nancy Lambros Greek American Studies Fund at the University of Minnesota.
