Jerry Woody Yarbrough, age 79 of Sioux Falls, SD died peacefully January 24th, 2014 at the Dow Rummel Allen wing in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services will be Wednesday January 29th at 10:30AM at Dow Rummel Chapel; Visitation will be Tuesday January 28th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Dow Rummel Chapel.

Jerry was born in Henderson, TX on October 6th, 1934. He attended Abilene Christian College where he met his wife, Lois Nell Woolley. They were married December 27th, 1956 and remained together for 54 years until her death on March 14th, 2010. Jerry was a scholar and university professor; he obtained his Masters in Philosophy from the University of Texas in 1964 and his PhD in English in 1967. He taught at Northeast Louisiana State and South Dakota State University, teaching English and Honors classes at SDSU from 1968 until his retirement in 1998. Upon retirement he and Nell moved to Las Cruces, NM where they spent several happy years before moving to Sioux Falls, SD in 2008.

Jerry was also a preacher with the Church of Christ throughout periods in his life. Jerry loved the Lord, his wife and children, his church, great literature, bad puns, and excellent food. He detested injustice, intolerance, and unquestioned authority. The memories and lessons he taught in the classroom, church, and elsewhere will be cherished by those that remember his courage, his intellect, and his faith.

Jerry is survived by his son Jeff and his wife Delores of Sioux Falls, SD, his daughter Beth Roth-Fry and her husband Kevin of Sykesville MD; two brothers, Jack and Jim Yarbrough and sisters, Janice Herd and Jane Eggers. He is preceded in death by his mother Barthenia Moore and her husband James, His father Ollie Yarbrough, his daughter Cara Yarbrough and his brother Joe Yarbrough.
