George DUNBAR Obituary
DUNBAR, George George "Dixie" Dunbar George B. Dunbar, Sr. 85 of Atlanta and St. Simons Island, died peacefully Monday, January 13, 2014, in Brunswick, Georgia. A graveside service will be held at Christ Church Columbarium on Friday, January 17, 2014 at 3:00 pm. followed by a reception at Ocean Forest Country Club on Sea Island. "DIXIE" as all knew him, served on the board at Frederica Bank and Trust in St. Simons. He was instrumental in bringing the "Atlanta Golf Classic" to Atlanta, Where he served as its chairman and President. The pros then referred to it as "Dixie's Tournament". George went to North Fulton High School where he played football and basketball. He attended Georgia Tech on a basketball scholarship, then played golf for the University of Florida. George began his successful career at the helm of E.V. Dunbar Company. Since 1936 a Leader in the sales service industry for refrigeration and air conditioning. His career and accomplishments have led to many philanthropic endeavors. George gave contributions to Christ Church, American Cancer Society, Brunswick Hospital, St. Simons Land Trust, and scholarships for golf at Georgia Tech. George was eager to accommodate anyone that was in need. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer who traveled extensively with his friends, he loved so dearly. Dixie was a pilot in the Air National Guard flying mostly F86's, P51's, F84's and even known on occasions to "BUZZ" the Beach Club. A member of Sea Island, Ocean Forest, Capital City Club and past Member of the Atlanta Country Club. His son George B. Dunbar Jr., a brother Martin Nicholes and Granddaughter Alexandria Dunbar, 11 nieces and nephews survive him. Mr. Dunbar was preceded in death by parents, Edward Vine and Dorothy Dunbar and loving wife of 61 years, Donna L. Dunbar. A special thanks to Adrienne Osborne and Derek Murry.
