Family-Placed Death Notice

DUWELL-CAPOUYA, Marlene Marlene Rose Duwell-Capouya, 51, passed away peacefully having completed a 21 year battle with breast cancer. Born and raised in Atlanta, Marlene was a 1979 graduate of Briarcliff High School. She earned a Bachelor of Engineering Science from Vanderbilt University in 1983, after which she began a career as a technical writer and class instructor. Realizing she wanted to do something more people-oriented, she made the decision to begin law school in 1990 at the University of Georgia. During her first summer break, she and her husband welcomed their daughter, Rachel. During her second summer break, she faced what became the challenge of a lifetime - a diagnosis of breast cancer. Despite grueling treatment, she earned her Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1993 having never missed a class. Her favorite class came during her second year when she studied Trusts and Estates and she was convinced that she loved to untangle the "who-gets-what" legal knot. Marlene also held a Certificate of Local Government Management from the University of Georgia Carl Vinson Institute (2005). She was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia as well as the US District Courts, Northern District and the United States Supreme Court. She began her 20 year career with the Gwinnett County Court System and served for 19 years as a court officer and Chief Clerk of the Gwinnett County Probate Court. Marlene had the opportunity to hear hundreds of cases while seated on the bench. She treated each case and each person with sensitivity and dignity, which she believed whole-heartedly that they deserved. Most recently, she was honored to serve as a Staff Attorney in the Gwinnett Superior Court. Aside from her family, she was most dedicated to her garden, her kitchen, and community service. She was a life member of Hadassah and a proud member of Congregation Or VeShalom and its Sisterhood having served as its president. Marlene dedicated her life to helping those in need be they family, friend or stranger. She exemplified this through her service on the board of the Gwinnett Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Marlene leaves to treasure her memory her husband, Nissim Leslie "Les" Capouya; daughter, Rachel Danielle Capouya; mother, Sarah Notrica Duwell; brother, Larry "Yehuda" Duwell; sister, Judy (Greg) Hirsch of Savannah; sisters-in-law Esta (Charles) Prenevost of Squamish, BC, and Rene Capouya; and ten nieces and nephews, Aaron, Micah, Benjamin and Elisheva Duwell of Atlanta; Jonathan, Sarah, and Lena Hirsch of Savannah, and Terry, Lauren, and Ryan Evans of Squamish, BC.
