Family-Placed Death Notice

VERHOEVEN, Stanley Stanley "Stan" Marten Verhoeven, devoted and loving family man and retired reference librarian, died on March 9, 2013 at age 70. Born in Glendale, California on October 4, 1942, Stan was raised in the Los Angeles metro area, where he enjoyed such youthful activities as bike-riding with friends in and around Hollywood, playing basketball at Canoga Park High School (where he was valedictorian), and being a high jumper on the Harvey Mudd College track and field team. After earning his bachelor's degree in Mathematics at the University of Iowa, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, he served as an officer in the Air Force, specializing in tracking satellites during the Cold War. While working on his Master's degrees in Anthropology and Library Science at the University of Texas at Austin, he met his future wife, and in 1978, he married, moved to Atlanta, and began his 24-year career as a reference librarian at Georgia State University. Stan particularly enjoyed fielding queries from diverse folks about diverse topics in the pre-Google years of his tenure at GSU. Blessed with twin sons in 1985, Stan was a wonderful father, enjoying and giving enjoyment to the boys (as with all-guy vacations to Disney world and various Florida beaches) and looking after their welfare. Stan was a vacation planner extraordinaire, arranging fabulous family summer vacations, including to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Washington, D.C., the Caribbean, Boston and Bar Harbor, Mesa Verde and Yellowstone National Parks, San Francisco and Santa Barbara, the Hawaiian islands, and the British isles. Stan showered his family with unconditional love! Stan is pre-deceased by his parents Marten and Dorothy Verhoeven, and survived by his wife Penelope (Penny) and sons John and Tristan Verhoeven, his Aunt Annetta and Uncle Ray Verhoeven, and many Verhoeven cousins. A visitation will be held for Stan from 7:00 - 9:00 PM on Friday, March 15th at Northside Chapel (12050 Crabapple Rd., Roswell, GA). Stan will be interred at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs, GA. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to ASPCA at www.aspca.org.
