James Knowles Notice

James "Jim" Melchior Knowles, 87 of York, passed away January 24, 2014. Born in Bowie, MD on July 11, 1926, he was the son of the late James and Emma Melchior Knowles. Mr. Knowles served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a life long member of the United Methodist Church serving at the local and district level, Wesley Council of the Wesley Theological Seminary, and a former president of Baltimore Metro Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors. He also completed a degree from Maryland Institute for the promotion of the Mechanic Arts Department of Architectural Drawing. Jim began working for J. Vinton Schafer & Sons as a laborer in the summer of 1941 and retired in 1991 as President and CEO. He took missionary trips to Jamaica and Roat¿n for hurricane relief and worked for Habitat for Humanity for 10 years. In Jim's retirement years he enjoyed traveling with his wife Eunice - RV'ing through most of the US, cruising and timesharing here and abroad. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by sisters, Emily McCarty, Grace Black; brother, Millard Knowles; and grandson, Paul Knowles. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Eunice (Lederer) Knowles; children, Ronald Knowles and wife Karin of Glen Arm, MD, Douglas Knowles and wife Deborah of Baltimore, MD, Elle Merkle and partner Marjorie Menacker of Richmond, VA, Nelson Knowles and wife Donna of St. Augustine, FL; grandchildren, Cecily Amrhein and husband Michael, Holly Edminster and husband Alexis, Elliot Randall Knowles, Sam Merkle, Sadie and Rachel Menacker, Brett Harris and wife Charlotte; great-grandchildren, Kyle, Lindsay and Andrew Amrhein, Mathias, Anthony and Annabelle Harris.

A memorial service will be held 3:30pm, Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Normandie Ridge Multi-Purpose Room, 1700 Normandie Drive,York, PA 17408. Rev. Richard Bowers will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wesley Theological Seminary, 4500 Massachusetts Ave., NW Washington, DC 20016, or Albright Care Services - Normandie Ridge 90 Maple Wood Drive, Lewisburg, PA 17837.
