ALAN E. MITCHELL - BURLINGTON - Alan E. Mitchell ("Mitch") died peacefully in Birchwood Terrace Healthcare on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013. He was born in Alburgh on July 4, 1928, to the late George and Kathleen (LaBombard) Mitchell. He was known to most as "Mitch" but so very proud to be called "Pops". He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1947 and later went on to serve in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954. Upon his discharge he was employed by the Grand Union for over 45 years of dedicated service. He was married to Pearl Turnbaugh on July 4, 1959, in Burlington. She predeceased him in 1989. They built their home on Green Acres Drive in Burlington, where Alan lived for 50 years until moving to Holy Cross Senior Housing in 2010. He was a member of St. Marks Parish and a member of the Burlington Elks Lodge, where he enjoyed visiting with his many friends. He loved baseball and enjoyed bragging about his accomplishments back in the day. He was an avid New York Yankees fan. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him and enjoyed his sense of humor. He is survived by his children and their spouses: Kevin and Cheryl Mitchell, and Shari and Douglas LeBlanc. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Ashley and Keegan Mitchell, his pride and joy; as well as nieces, nephews, and many friends. He was predeceased by his brothers: Carlton in 1945, and Harry in 2007. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to everyone at Birchwood Terrace for the compassionate care and attention extended to their father during his stay. Visiting hours will be on Sunday, March 10, 2013, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the LaVigne Funeral Home, 132 Main St. in Winooski. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 11, 2013, at 1 p.m. at St. Mark Catholic Church in Burlington. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in honor of our father may be made to Birchwood Terrace Activities Fund, c/o Linnie Aubin, 43 Starr Farm Rd., Burlington, VT 05408.
