MARY BARBARA JONES ESSEX JUNCTION - Mary Barbara Jones, formerly of Essex Junction, died as a result of Alzheimer's disease, early Sunday morning, April 6, 2014, in The Arbors, in Shelburne. She was born in New Haven, Conn., on April 5, 1931, the daughter of the late Richard L. and Katherine Sullivan Jones. She and her family lived in Branford, Conn., where she enjoyed many sports and family events with cousins, friends and neighbors. Mary Barbara attended Branford schools and was a graduate of Mt. Ida College in Newton Center, Mass. "Barb" was employed by the Yale University Athletic Association before moving to Vermont in 1970. Employment at the University of Vermont included positions in the President's office as his Executive Secretary, as Office Manager, and as Special Assistant to the President. She then moved on to the Public Relations office. She also served as co-chair of the University's United Way Campaign. She retired from UVM in 1995. Mary Barbara was a communicant of Holy Family Church in Essex Junction where she served on the Parish Council. She completed the Diocesan Lay Ministry Program and in 1998 was commissioned, along with her classmates, by Bishop Kenneth Angell to serve the church. She was also instrumental in the formation of Holy Family's Youth Ministry Program Committee and served the parish as a sacristan and as a Eucharistic minister which included administering communion to ill and disabled persons in their homes. She also served as a sponsor for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. Mary Barbara was an avid sports fan, especially enjoying televised tennis, golf and football. She was an enthusiastic bridge player, hiker, golfer, swimmer, cross country skier, and tennis player. She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Jones Davis of Burlington; and her brother, Richard L. Jones Jr. and sister-in-law, Martha Bell Jones of Lexington, Ky. Other survivors include: niece, Samantha Jones Wright of Lexington, Ky., Michael Wright, and their children, Oliver, Franklin, and Beatrice; nephew, Richard M. Jones of Salem, Mass., his wife, Naomi Cottrell Jones, and their children, Frances and Phoebe; niece, Karin Davis Powell and her husband, James Powell of Raleigh, N.C.; niece, Deborah Davis Marshall and her husband, Philip Marshall of South Hero; niece, Susan Davis, Kevin Douglas, and their children, Marshall and Julia of North Ferrisburgh; and by several cousins. The family would like to thank the many excellent caregivers from the Visiting Nurse Association, Converse Home, and The Arbors who supported Mary Barbara during her difficult illness over the past four years. There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Family Church in Essex Junction on Saturday, May 31, 2014, at 11 a.m., followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. Gregory and Son Cremation Service,, is in charge of arrangements.
