BERLE USMCR RET., COL. JOHN A. (JACK), 92 yrs old, of Atlantic Beach, FL, died November 29th, 2013. He was born in Mt. Vernon, NY and graduated from Colgate University in Hamilton, NY. In WWII, he served as a pilot in the US Marine Corps. He was stationed in the South Pacific during the New Britain/Rabaul campaigns and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and four Air Medals. He retired from the Marine Corps Reserves as a Colonel in July 1975. In 1947, Jack joined the Sears Roebuck and Co. Executive Training Program becoming a store manager in Newport, RI in 1955. He was later transferred to Middleton, RI and on to Annapolis, Maryland in May of 1962, where he remained as store manager until his retirement in 1980. While in Annapolis he was active in the business community serving as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, President of the Rotary Club, and a Paul Harris Fellow. Jack's lifetime connection to the military enabled him to serve as a Blue and Gold Officer for the Naval Academy and Chapter President, State President, and National Director of the Navy League of the US. He also was a member of the Military Order of the World Wars. During his stay in Annapolis the love of the water and sailing brought him great joy. He was a member of the Annapolis Yacht Club where he participated in numerous activities. In 1993, he moved to Fleet Landing in Atlantic Beach, FL. During his 20 years there he served as Treasurer of the Fleet Landing Endowment Fund and was a member of the Vintage Players. As an active member of Christ United Methodist Church in Neptune Beach, FL, Jack served on the Finance Committee, the Men's Club, Meals on Wheels program, and dinner service at the Mission House. For 59 years, he was married to Meriwyn (Wyn) Athalie Parker until her death in 2002. In 2004, he married Helen Crymes Latta. He is survived by his wife, twin daughters Lt. Col. Jill A. Berle, USMC Ret. of Summerland Key, FL and A. Lynn Felice ( Ron) of Ft. Myers, FL. and step daughter Carol Latta Conti ( Pete ) of Bedford, NH and step son Randy Latta (Mary Jane) of Jacksonville, FL. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Community Hospice, 4266 Sunbeam Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32257, and/or Christ United Methodist Church, 400 Penman Road, Neptune Beach, FL 32226. A Memorial Service will be held Jan. 6, 2014 at 10:30am in Windward Hall, Fleet Landing, Atlantic Beach, FL. Once a Marine always a Marine....SEMPER FI .
