Edward J. Barrett, 91, attorney and big-band leader and musician Edward J. Barrett, 91, a Chicago native and long-time North Shore resident, died September 2 near his home in Pinehurst, North Carolina. He was born in Chicago, IL where his father, Charles V. Barrett was an attorney and Chairman of the Cook County Board of Review under Mayor William Hale Thompson in the 1920s. The Barrett home on landmark street Hawthorne Place, was razed in the 1960s to build the Chicago Day School.Mr. Barrett attended The Latin School of Chicago, Our Lady of Mount Carmel schools, and graduated from Northwestern University. He served in the USAC during World War II in Guam. After the war, he earned his law degree at Northwestern Law School and joined the Schiff, Hardin and Waite firm prior to starting his own practice. He practiced law in Chicago from 1950-2005, when he moved to Pinehurst, NC. He served as Attorney for the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in 1979, trying loyalty cases; he was a Special Assistant to the Illinois Attorney General; and he was an attorney for the Illinois Tollway Authority. In addition, Mr. Barrett was the Treasurer of the Winnetka Village Caucus. Perhaps his greatest life-long love was big band music. Mr. Barrett was a well-known orchestra leader in Chicago and in Pinehurst, NC, playing clarinet, alto and soprano saxophones. As an orchestrator, he wrote all arrangements for his 18-piece "Goodman Legacy" big band, amassing a library of 500+ arrangements over his lifetime. He was a member of The Chicago Club and Exmoor Country Club for over 50 years, and a lifetime member of the former Chicago Athletic Association (CAA). An avid golfer and reader, Mr. Barrett also co-authored a biography "The Mystery of Lady Bountiful," published in 2002. Mr. Barrett is survived by two children: Edward John Barrett, Jr. (Mary) of Atlanta, Marilyn "Lyna" Ennis Barrett, of Chicago; and 2 grandchildren, Edward John Barrett, III and Andrew Thomas Barrett both of Atlanta. Visitation will be held Friday, September 6 from 5-7 p.m. at the Boles Funeral Home, 425 W. Pennsylvania Avenue, Southern Pines, NC and Funeral Services will be held Saturday, September 7 at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, 300 Dundee Road, Pinehurst, NC. Interment will take place at a later date at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The 100 Club of Chicago or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
