Edwin Hlavka Obituary
Edwin John Hlavka, 76, of Downers Grove, died on Wednesday, March 19th due to complications following surgery. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin F. and Frances M. Hlavka of Berwyn, IL. He was a graduate of Morton High School, Berwyn (1955), Northwestern University (1959) and The University of Chicago (1961) with degrees in finance. He is survived by Catherine Beverly Hlavka, his wife of 51 years, his daughter, Susan Walter (William) of Winfield, IL and his son, Edwin Hlavka (Elizabeth) of Minneapolis, MN. He was the proud grandfather (Papa) of Eleanor and Henry Walter and Margaret, John and Anne Hlavka. He spent the majority of his career in the banking industry. He left Continental Illinois National Bank & Trust Company of Chicago (1965 - 1983) as Senior Vice President in the Audit Division to join Harris Trust & Savings Bank (1983 - 1993) where he retired as Senior Vice President and Controller. He dedicated many years to the Berwyn community where he grew up, serving as a Director and Treasurer on the Board of MacNeal Hospital and as Secretary - Treasurer of MacNeal Health Foundation. After retirement, he served on the Board of Holy Cross Hospital, Chicago. After residing 28 years in Western Springs, he moved to Downers Grove sixteen years ago. He enjoyed diverse interests including woodworking, classical music, reading, fishing, travel, and in recent years he was able to pursue his interest in paleontology by working at both a dinosaur dig in Wyoming & a mammoth site in South Dakota. In good weather he was able to enjoy his 1953 MG auto and belonged to both the Vintage MG Car Club of Chicago and the Chicagoland MG Club. A private funeral is planned. A memorial will be held in late April to celebrate his life.
