Erikson Institute joins with the people of Chicago in mourning the passing of a great woman, Chicago's former first lady, Maggie Daley. Mrs. Daley is known for her many contributions to Chicago's children and the arts, and Erikson was fortunate to enjoy a very rich and warm relationship with Mrs. Daley and her husband. In 2005, Mrs. Daley received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Erikson. The commendation presented to her at the graduation ceremony read in part: "With a wise and open heart and faith in the power of work, she removes the barriers that prevent children from achieving their full potential, ensuring their healthy development, creating opportunities for self-discovery, transforming their vision of the future, and, in so doing, enriching the future for us all." Three years later, she accepted the Spirit of Erikson Institute Award presented to After School Matters, an organization she co-founded to expand out-of-school experiences for teens. We celebrate Maggie Daley's life and, although we will miss her, we remember the great contributions she made to Chicago in support of children and families.

My deepest condolences to Mr. Mayor Daley and his Family. Maggie was / is such a lady with grace, strength, courage, and even while battling cancer still did what she needed to do for her Family and Chicago. I have always enjoyed following her work, seeing what she wears, and just watching her anytime on the news. She did everything in such a way and with class. Mr. Daley, You have a wonderful, amazing wife, and don't think she isn't with you anymore, she is, and always will be in your heart. I now understand why you stepped down from being Mayor, but Please know you are missed, and please come back!!! You are Chicago and Chicago isn't the same without you! You and Maggie are Chicago! My dentist Dr Parrott has a Picture of you, Mayor Daley and him in his office, and I am so jealous, because I always wanted to meet you and shake your hand, the closest I ever got to you was working at the Daley Center, ha-ha. ;-) I wish you and your family the best of everything, and please know you are all very blessed to have Maggie as your mother and your wife, and friend and grandmother. She will be much missed but never forgotten!

Karl Wirsum and Lorri Gunn with Maggie Daley and curator, Lannie Silverman (far right) at Cultural Center exhibition
With our deepest condolences to the Daley family from a family of artists -
My husband and I met Maggie on a few occasions and found her to be a gracious and sincere appreciator of art. Our son, Zack, attended Gallery 37 all through high-school and into college. He attributes his experience there to confirming and inspiring his career path as an artist. I will never forget Maggie's attentive viewing and insightful comments as she accompanied my husband and myself on a tour of his retrospective art exhibit at the Cultural Center a few years ago. She then took us on a tour of After School Matters and her pride in the program was palpable. Chicago arts will never have a more supportive booster than your, and our, beloved Maggie. Her indomitable spirit and courage continue to inspire us and many others. May God bless her on her path and give you comfort.

Mayor Daley and Family,
My prayers and thoughts are with all of you at this most difficult time. I will always treasure the friendship and memories of knowing her. That great, big smile of hers;said it all.She was and will always be the First Lady of Chicago. May God keep All of you near Him.
Looking down on all of us, Maggie is saying this beautiful poem.

Remember Me

To the living,I am gone;to the sorrowful,I will never return.
To the angry,I was cheated, but to the happy,I am at peace.
And to the faithful,I have never left.I cannot be seen, but I can be heard.
So as you stand upon a shore - gazing at a beautiful sea - Remember me.
As you look in awe at a mighty forest and its grand majesty - Remember me.
As you look upon a flower and admire its simplicity - Remember me.
Remember me in your heart, your thoughts, and your memories of the times we loved, the times we fought, the times we laughed.
For if you always think of me, I will have never gone away.
Maggie, may you have the eternal rest that God has promised you.
