Dr. Roscoe Conkling Foster, Jr. died on Monday April 21, 201 as a result of multi-year struggles with metastatic prostate cancer. He was 85 years old. Roscoe was born in Edmondson, AR on January 23, 1929. His mother died when he was eight years old. From the age of eight he was raised by his father in Chicago, IL where he completed his early education through college graduating from Roosevelt University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1952. In 1952, Roscoe was drafted into the U.S. Army. After graduating from The Engineer Officer's Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, VA, he was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. where he completed his tour of service as a battery commander. Upon discharge he held the rank of Captain, USAR. Following military service, Roscoe was employed as a research associate in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Chicago were he co-authored several original articles published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology and the Journal of Oil Chemists Society. In September, 1954, Roscoe was married to Theresa Light of Flint, MI. The couple adopted two siblings in 1964, Barbara and David. The marriage ended with Theresa's untimely death in March of 1971. Roscoe was a graduate of Howard University Dental School, class of 1960. He was an honor graduate and elected into the Omicron Upsilon Honorary. He practiced general dentistry in Chicago until the summer of 1967. He then returned to Howard University where he completed two years post graduate study in orthodontics. Once again in Chicago, he would practice orthodontics for 30 years. In 1973 Roscoe Foster married Dr. Juliann S. Bluitt, as associate dean at Northwestern University Dental School. The couple continued to live and work in Chicago until Roscoe's retirement in 1999 while maintaining a part time residency in Hilton Head Island from 1994. They settled as residents of The Golf Club in Indigo Run. Roscoe was a member of Island Lutheran Church where he served two terms as an elder and often as an usher. Roscoe was a member and one time director of the Chicago Dental Society as well as president of his local branch. He was a member of The American Dental Association, The American Association of Orthodontists, a fellow of The American College of Dentists and member of the Odontographic Society of Chicago. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Golf was Roscoe's retirement passion although he had many other interests. He loved languages, particularly Spanish, which he studied throughout life, stamp collecting and classical guitar. His earlier years were consumed with flying. He was an instrument rated private pilot. Preceding Dr. Foster in death was his dedicated father and his loving step-mother, Charlie B. Foster. Left to mourn are his devoted and loving wife, Dr. Juliann S. Bluitt, two adopted children, Barbara Foster of La Porte, Texas and David of Saipan, MP, a brother, Robert C. Talley of Colorado Springs, Co and several special cousins. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 28, 2014 at Island Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Six Oaks Memorial Park.
