Norman Wallace Hoover Obituary
NORMAN WALLACE HOOVER Norman Wallace Hoover was born March 2, 1917, and died December 1, 2013. He passed away peacefully at Renown Regional Medical Center with his family members present. Norm was born in Westwood, Lassen County, California to William Hoover and his wife, Jessie Templeton Organ. He was the youngest of eight children, and all of his brothers and sisters preceded him in death. His father, Will, was a saw sharpener and followed the logging projects around the region. Thus the family lived at various times in Westwood, Susanville, Deleker, Oroville, Verdi, and Reno. After high school graduation, Norm enrolled at the University of Nevada. He completed three years there when he was called to serve in WWII. He joined the Army and attained the rank of Sergeant. He served in the Pacific, and was awarded a Bronze Star. After the war, he returned to UNR and completed his degree in Civil Engineering in 1949. Also in 1949, he married the love of his life, Joan Osier, and their relationship was to last 57 years. He went to work for the California Department of Water Resources, and his long career there saw him as a Senior Project Engineer in several of that state's major dams and aqueducts, in the State Water Project. As he neared retirement, he and Joan built their dream house in Chico, California, and lived there for several years. Joan passed on in 2007, and at that time, Norm moved to Reno to be close to his remaining family. With the assistance of Michael and Linda Hoover, he found Promenade on the River, and he lived his remaining years there. He had a very active retirement and loved the activities and people at Promenade. During the last two years his health deteriorated, with him finally becoming quite dependent on his family for assistance. His final admission to the hospital, and his passing there was truly a gift. Norm is survived by his nephew, Michael (Linda) and Timothy Hoover, his niece Melissa Hoover, and his step-daughter, Judie McFarlane. He was a life long Elks member, an avid square dancer, and a licensed Civil Engineer. He loved life and valued family over all else. A Memorial and Celebration of Life is scheduled for December 20, 2013 at 3:30 pm at Promenade on the River. Inurnment next to Joan will take place at a future date at Glen Oaks Memorial Park in Chico, California. We wish to recognize the nursing staffs of the Telemetry and Palliative Care units at Renown. Their professional skills were truly impressive. They combined those with a compassion that was truly comforting. May they be blessed in their efforts. Arrangements under the care of Walton Funeral Home in Reno, Nevada.
