Fred KAPLAN Obituary

Fred, age 78, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2013 at home. He was the beloved husband of Mary Charles Kaplan; loving father of Deen (Margaret) Kaplan of McLean, VA, Madeline Kaplan Fusi of Florence, Italy, Michael (Andrea) Kaplan of Ann Arbor, MI and Adam Kaplan of Washington, DC; adoring grandfather of Nicole, Alexander, Joshua, Jonathan and Cameron; Dear brother of Bernard (Francine) Kaplan and Janet (Bill) Marel. Dr. Kaplan was born in Brooklyn, NY and attended New York and Brandeis Universities earning a PhD in Chemistry from Yale University. He served 40 years in the department of chemistry at the University of Cincinnati. His research and discoveries in the then revolutionary field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) aided in the development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). After a sabbatical at Stanford University he focused on Ion Cyclotron Resonance Spectroscopy, in which he was a pioneer. He coauthored "The Vocabulary of Organic Chemistry" a widely used book that was translated into multiple languages for use of students around the world. He garnered a reputation as a skilled professor whose affable demeanor and passion for teaching made chemistry "fun" for a generation of students. Dr. Kaplan will be remembered best as a devoted family man who loved nothing more than spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a fixture at UC basketball and football games and was an enthusiastic tennis player for years before being hindered by Parkinson's disease in the final decade of his life. Visitation will be held at the Gwen Mooney Funeral Home, 4389 Spring Grove Ave., on Saturday, May 11, 2013 from 1-3 PM. Memorial service will follow at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Fred Kaplan Scholarship Fund, c/o UC Dept. of Chemistry, Attn: Dr. Allan Pinhas, PO Box 210172, Cincinnati, OH 45220-0172.
