John FISCHER DDS Obituary

Dr. John W. Fischer passed peacefully on Saturday, August 9, 2014, age 74. He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Janice; dear step-son, Christian (Margaret) Kulujian of Chicago, IL; mother-in-law Helen Fischer, and special friend Tiffany Taney. Dr. Fischer was predeceased by his son John Edward, and parents Jane (Peggy) and Norvin Fischer. Dr. Fischer was born on September 23, 1939. After receiving his Bachelor's Degree from Ohio Wesleyan College, he attended the Ohio State University College of Dentistry and graduated Summa Cum Laude. He completed his residency at the University of Michigan, and became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics at the age of 35. Dr. Fischer was a prominent orthodontist in Western Hills, treating over 10,000 patients and providing pro bono services as well. During his 45 year career he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Kentucky (1983 to 1986) and guest lectured at the Pediatric Dental Department at Children's Hospital. Dr. Fischer was a member of Mensa, the Cincinnati Dental Society, the Ohio Dental Association, the American Dental Association and the American Association of Orthodontists. He helped found the Western Hills Study Club and was a past president of the Ohio Valley Dental Seminar. Dr. Fischer was a dedicated Michigan sports fan, but more importantly he appreciated the emphasis that Michigan placed on scholastics. An avid reader and student of history, he was a champion of education. His collection of books was diverse and extensive, but History- particularly World War II- was his favorite category. He enjoyed discussing history with others- especially younger people, and would challenge them to learn and think for themselves. In addition to reading, he enjoyed playing tennis and attended the ATP matches for many years. He also expertly built intricate wooden model ships and many model cars. He enjoyed his British sports cars and vacationing on Mullett Lake in Michigan. In his later years, he really enjoyed the company of his beloved golden retriever, Clemmie. Visitation will be on Saturday, August 16, 2014, from 11:00am until the time of the Service at 1:00pm, at the Gwen Mooney Funeral Home at Spring Grove Cemetery, 4389 Spring Grove Avenue, Cincinnati, OH.
