Asheville - Ambrose Dowd Powell, 77, died Saturday, November 2, 2013, at the John F. Keever Hospice Solace Center.

A native of Caldwell Co., NC and raised in New York, Mr. Powell was a son of the late John Finley and Mary Dowd Powell.

Mr. Powell was an 8-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, including tours in the Aleutian Islands and Topeka, KS. After moving to Asheville in 1966, he worked for 12 years at the Asheville Citizen-Times, first in their circulation department and then in classified ads. He then worked for Buncombe Co., first with AB-Tech Community College, and more recently with the Property Tax Re-appraisal Dept. Mr. Powell was a devoted member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Gail Winkler Powell; brother John Powell Strader; brother-in-law Dorland Winkler; nephews Lance and Michael Winkler; and niece the Rev. Denise Clark-Jones.

A Funeral Mass for Mr. Powell will be celebrated by the Rev. Fr. Dean Cesa at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 8, at St. Joan of Arc.

The family expresses their sincere appreciation to Dr. Thomas Rennard for the excellent care he provided for Mr. Powell.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Joan of Arc Building Fund, 768 Asbury Rd., Candler, NC 28715, or to CarePartners Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28816.
