Claude Michael Luke

Asheville - C. Michael (Mike) Luke, M. D., esteemed child and adolescent psychiatrist, died November 26, 2013 at his home in Asheville, North Carolina at the age of 62. A native of Atlanta, Georgia born on June 2, 1951, Luke was the son of Marzelle Cowart Luke and the late Claude William (Billy) Luke.

A brilliant and accomplished physician, Luke was a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and a Board Certified Addictionologist, with an affinity for treating the most vulnerable and traumatized patients. Ardently devoted to his work, Luke assisted hundreds of children, adolescents and their families in navigating the challenges of mental illness and addiction with his balance of diagnostic intellect and reassuring compassion.

Luke graduated summa cum laude from the University of Georgia in 1974 where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. In 1978, he graduated cum laude from Emory University's School of Medicine, and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society. He completed his Medical Internship, Psychiatry Residency and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Emory University. Luke began his practice at the Georgia Highlands Center for Mental Health in Dalton, Georgia, where he served as Medical Director from 1983 - 1986. He returned to Emory in 1986 and served as Assistant Clinical Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, including serving as Medical Director of the Child and Adolescent Division of the Central Fulton County Mental Health Center. Throughout his career, Luke continued to serve Emory's School of Medicine as Lecturer and Supervisor for the Senior Fellows in the Child and Adolescent Fellowship, a role he held at the time of his death.

In addition to his time at Emory, Luke served as Medical Director for a variety of psychiatric facilities during his 31 year career including, Charter Peachford Hospital, CPC Parkwood Hospital, Vista Community Services and Turning Point Hospital.

A voracious learner, Luke was more motivated by books than money and preferred solitude to social gatherings. He was fascinated by the world's religions and spent much of his time studying spirituality. Those closest to him will remember his genuine concern for and interest in helping others, his quick wit, his insatiable curiosity, his love of fishing and his kind heart. He is survived by his wife, Susan Heriot Luke and their daughter, Nora Kathryn; his mother, Marzelle Luke; his sister, Donna Luke Sands (Stan), nephew, Dean Sands (Ashley), niece, Katherine Sands Deere (Jason). A private service will be held at All Souls Episcopal Church in Asheville NC on Tuesday, December 3, at 3:00 P.M. The family request donations to Skyland Trail of Atlanta in lieu of flowers.
