Wallace S. Knight

Canton - Wallace Stringfellow Knight, age 86, passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home.

He was a native of Waynesville and the son of the late Adam and Nola Sisk Knight. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Adam Knight, Jr. and Vernon J. Knight; and three sisters, Edna Gordon Knight, Annie Virginia Knight, and Jennie Ruby Knight; and a step-daughter, Beverly Griffin. Wally graduated from Canton High School, received a BS degree from the University of Georgia in 1950, and earned a Master of Science in Public Administration from the George Washington University in 1966. After 30 years of service, he retired from Federal Civil Service and also retired from the United States Army Reserve as Lieutenant Colonel, Infantry. Wally served as a volunteer Bible reader at two Canton area nursing homes for several years, and made 43 mission trips to Central and South America working with Baptist missionaries, a work which he loved.

He is survived by his wife of 45years, Ruth Inman Knight; a son, Wallace Stringfellow Knight, Jr., of Warner Robins, Georgia; three daughters, Theresa Kay Allen and her husband, Rodney, of Milledgeville, Georgia, Kristina Siebenmorgan of Warner Robins, Georgia, and Mary Ellen Miller and her husband, Marvin, of Fines Creek; a stepson, William Bates of Canton; two step-daughters, Jennifer Turner of North Carolina, and Deborah Bates of Melbourne, Florida; nine grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. Roy Kilby officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from Noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church African Mission Fund, 5868 Pigeon Road, Canton, NC 28716.
