Bernard E. "Bernie" Barnes Obituary
Bernie Barnes passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013, in Fort Worth at the age of 82. Bernie was born May 5, 1931, in Gary, Ind., to Harry and Alice Barnes. Orphaned at the age of 2, Bernie was raised by Roy and Lolabelle Ransom whom he considered to be his parents. Bernie joined the U.S. Air Force on Aug. 19, 1950, at the age of 19, soon after he completed high school. While serving his country for 20 years, Bernie achieved the rank of master sergeant and was awarded the Bronze Star medal for meritorious service on July 20, 1970, for his accomplishments while stationed in Southeast Asia. He retired in September 1970. Soon after he became a successful restaurateur owning two truck stops in Oklahoma City for many years. He was an avid sports fan who loved his Chicago Cubs and his Dallas Cowboys. He enjoyed hard work, livestock, the outdoors, and spending time with the ones he loved. His love for the simpler things in life was evident while owning and operating the B Bar B ranch in Dibble, Okla. He was a honorable man who accomplished many things during his lifetime. However, his greatest accomplishment was his family. He was happiest surrounded by them sharing in food, beverage and laughter. Bernie was a loving and generous man, a wonderful son, brother, uncle, father and grandfather. His passing has created an empty space in our hearts. He was loved greatly and will be missed by many. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nanci Gibson, on Sept. 30, 1986. Let Molly run, Dad!! Survivors: Sister, Dorothy Porter of Sebring, Fla.; brother, Robert Barnes of Valparaiso, Ind.; half sister, Sandy Lockhart of Hobart, Ind.; daughters, Lyn Sheppard and Candice Jabo of Weatherford; sons, Robert Barnes of Mansfield, Daniel Barnes of Las Vegas, Nev., and Timothy Barnes of Midlothian; along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and friends.
