Obituary Condolences

Emil E. Bahnmaier, age 82, loving husband of Irene M. Bahnmaier, darling dad of Lisa (Mike) Krzywda-Morris, Sara (Todd) Bahnmaier-Blaszczak, Maria (Mark) Karkos, Kristen (Patrick) Marzolf and Kurt Bahnmaier; fond grandpa of Enver Thorburn, Alex and Zoe Krzywda, Joseph, Peter, Eric and Aaron Karkos, Ted, Claire and Ella Marzolf, Thad, Valerie and Steven Blaszczak, Scott and Amy Morris, beloved older brother of Bill (Peggy) Bahnmaier and Christine (Don) Benecke, died peacefully on November 9 while touring Spain with his wife. Emil was born in 1931 to (the late) Emil and Rose Bahnmaier. He graduated high school at Maryville Academy in Des Plaines, IL, took his bachelor's degree at IIT in Chicago and his master's from Michigan State in East Lansing. He worked at GE in Fort Wayne, where he was married to Irene and they started a family that grew over the years. He took his next job in South Bend at Bendix Corporation on the Gemini space program. After Gemini ended, the Bahnmaiers moved to Des Plaines and then Mount Prospect, where they resided for more than 40 years. Emil was Chief Engineer for W.W. Grainger, Inc. from 1966-1997, where he built a strong engineering department with an outstanding reputation, and continued as an engineering consultant thereafter his retirement. He led an active life and mastered many technical skills, which he devoted to helping immediate family, friends, neighbors and extended family with their cars, homes, businesses and lives whenever and wherever he was needed. He was a confirmed Catholic, attending the sacraments regularly and raising his family in the Catholic faith. In the 1970s he served with distinction on the District 59 Board of Education. Emil enjoyed reading and concert-going; he was an amateur historian of the Civil War and World War II and supporter of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra. Both he and Irene paid much attention to their grandkids, taking them on trips, attending their sports, concerts and dance recitals, and having family dinners. He and Irene took many fun and educational trips both far and near, especially with Elderhostel. His passing occurred suddenly but peacefully near the end of his last trip with Irene. His life was a blessing and a shining example to those who knew and loved him. Visitation Friday, November 22, 3-8 PM at Friedrichs Funeral Home, 320 W. Central Road (at Northwest Highway), Mount Prospect. Funeral Saturday, November 23, 10:00 AM from the Funeral Home, to St. Zachary Church, 567 W. Algonquin Rd., Des Plaines, Mass 10:30 AM. Interment All Saints Catholic Cemetery. "Our family prefers donations to Save the Children, in lieu of flowers and masses." Funeral information, 847-255-7800 or www.friedrichsfh.com.
