LONG GROVE - Xavier Francis Kaufmann (born Xaver Franz) passed away on February 8, 2021 at the age of 91. He was born on July 18, 1929 to Lina and Franz Kaufmann-Widmer on a farm in Sins (Aargau), Switzerland and later moved with his family to Sarmenstorf where they operated a restaurant. As a teenager he completed an apprenticeship in machining, and he later served in the Swiss Army as a driver transporting troops on winding mountain roads. In 1953, he attended an exchange program under the post-World War II Marshall Plan at The University of Notre Dame in South Bend, where he lived with a host family and worked at the Studebaker factory. He eventually settled in Chicago where he started his own machine tool import and distribution company in 1957, Astral Precision Equipment Corp., which he led until his retirement at age 86. His hobbies included golf, blackjack, and yard work. Xavier is survived by his wife of 44 years, Regina (nee Erismann); his children, Caroline (husband Gary) and Philip; his grandson, Odin "Bubeli"; his sister, Carla; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Josef and Oskar; and sisters, Truda, Frieda, and Erna. He was loved and will be missed by his family and many friends.
