NEWPORT NEWS, - Nancy May (Dimond) Sommer, born August 4, 1947 in Pittsburgh, PA; passed peacefully at home on March 18, 2013 in the company of her husband and their children. Nancy Graduated from Chartiers Valley High School in 1965; and is known to have "gone through" Harvard. Nancy enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve as a SPAR in 1973; retiring as a Chief Petty Officer after a combination of active and reserve duty spanning 34 years of service with various assignments as a court reporter / legal clerk, including the Coast Guard's Clerk of the Court. Chief Sommer was a long time member of the U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer's Association. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents Richard Dimond and Helen (Messner) Dimond. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Peter Sommer of Newport News, VA; son Jeremy Sommer, his wife Kristin of Fayetteville, GA; and daughter Nancy (Sommer) Russell, her husband Brett of Norfolk, VA; 3 grandchildren with another on the way; and her three sisters Andrea and husband Timothy Nowicki of Pittsburgh, PA; Margaret and husband Stanley Lizon of Pahrump, NV; and Diane and husband James Diehl of Corpus Christi, TX. After several years of attending Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Newport News, Nancy entered full communion with the Roman Catholic Church in 1995. She served as an Extraordinary Minster of Holy Communion. She was also a member of the St. Elizabeth's Guild. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to honor our service veterans be provided to the Wounded Warrior Project. Final arrangements are being handled by R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton. The family will receive friends from 5:30-7:30 PM Wednesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. The family will receive friends again from 9-10:00 AM Thursday at the church. Immediately following at 10:00 A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated. Interment will follow in Veteran's Memorial Gardens in Hampton.
