Walter J. Colborne Sr.

AGE: 89 • Staten Island, N.Y.

Walter J. Colborne Sr., of Staten Island, NY, and his wife, Marie, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, victims of Hurricane Sandy. He was 89; she was 66. Mr. Colborne was born in Lowell, Mass., but grew up in Brooklyn, NY and was a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School. He also attended the University of Mississippi and the College of Staten Island. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning a Bronze Star. In 1946, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, participating in the Berlin Airlift and serving as an intelligence specialist until he was honorably discharged in 1951. His long career included many years working in an executive management capacity at Gearhart Chevrolet and Gearhart BMW in Denville, NJ. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Reynolds Colborne; and his son, Walter J. Colborne Jr. In 1986, he married Marie Spiegel of Staten Island and together they ran a successful BMW dealership there until they retired.

Mr. Colborne is survived by three daughters, Virginia Drancsak (James) of Auburn, NY, Cathleen Colborne Kmetz (Ronald) of Keyport, and Christine Colborne Becker (James) of Roswell, GA, as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Jeanne-Marie Mikkelsen of Ft. Myers, FL, and her three children.

Mr. Colborne was cremated. A memorial service will be held for him and Marie at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 at Matthew Funeral Home, 2508 Victory Blvd., Staten Island, NY.
