Albert "Pappy" Richard

OPELOUSAS - Albert C. Richard, better known as "Pappy" died peacefully on August 9, 2014 at Opelousas General Health System. He was 85 years old. He was born in Opelousas on November 15, 1928. Pappy graduated from Opelousas High School in 1947. He then joined the air force and was stationed in Munich, Germany during the WWII airlift. After discharge he went to work for South Central Bell (BellSouth) and retired from the phone company in 1983 with 33 years of service. After retiring he opened his own phone repair shop and continued that until 2002. He was also an active member of the Evangeline Chapter of Telephone Pioneers.

He was married to the former Marie L. Marino and they shared 60 loving years together. They kept active and enjoyed sharing life with their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Pappy's love of life and people kept him active. His grandchildren and children affectionately called him 'Pocky'.

Pappy was very active in his children's school, Opelousas Catholic (AIC), where he worked tirelessly for the annual school fair and running the concession stand at O.C. football games. On week-ends you could find him building, painting, and repairing whatever needed to be done to the school buildings and grounds. In 1967, he was awarded the PTC Man of the Year Award. In the summers he helped coach little league and never missed a game of his children, his grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Pappy had a strong Catholic faith. He was very active in the formation of Our Lady Queen of Angels Church where he served on the board in its formative years. For years he helped set up, organize, and work at Mayfest, the annual church fair. He was also a church usher, a Eucharistic Minister, and a Knights of Columbus member.

He is survived by his wife, Marie L. Marino Richard; two sons, William R Richard (Jacque) of Lafayette, Robert C. Richard (Blanca) of Fort Worth, TX; two daughters, Judith A. Richard Lucito (Richard) of Opelousas, and Christine L. Richard Kaufman of Lafayette.

He has 11 grandchildren, Leah Thomasson, Andrew B. Thomasson, Krystal M. Richard (Kevin) and Matthew R. Richard of Opelousas, Michael P. Lucito (Angie) and Kenneth G. Kaufman of Lafayette, Carlos J. Lucito of New Orleans, David E. Lucito of Oregon, and Emily Lucito Smith (David), Misty Richard Reynolds (Max) and Josh K. Richard of Fort Worth, Texas.

He has 6 great grand children, Tyler Thomasson, Alexandra Pham, and Camrin Richard of Opelousas, Jacob Lucito of Lafayette, and Aaron Richard and McKinley Smith of Fort Worth, Texas. He is also survived by one sister, May R. Ingram, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Lorin Marie Richard Thomasson, his parents, Aline Miller and Eddie W. Richard, and two brothers, Howard "Lil Dog" Richard and Sidney Richard of Lake Charles, La.

Visitation will be held at Our Lady Queen of Angels Church on August 19, 2014 starting at 5:00 PM. A rosary will be recited at 5:15 PM followed by a eulogy service at 5:30 PM and a memorial Mass in the church at 6:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to Opelousas Catholic School Memorial Fund, 428 E. Prudhomme Lane, Opelousas, LA or a . Melancon Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
