Alan Gardner Lewis Obituary
Alan Gardner Lewis

Age 83, of Perryville, MD died on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Compassionate Care Hospice.

Alan was born in Kenmore, New York to William E. and Carmel Lewis (Cameron). He graduated from Kenmore High School and earned his bachelor's degree at Miami University of Ohio and an M.S. in statistics from the University of Delaware. He attended Miami on a Navy ROTC scholarship and served on active duty as a lieutenant commander assigned to destroyer escorts during the Korean Conflict. He remained an active member of the Naval Reserves for the next decade.

Following his discharge from the Navy, Alan moved to Washington, D.C. to work as a programmer analyst for the Navy's David Taylor Model Basin, where he met his future wife, Betty Ann Adams. They married in 1958 and relocated to Delaware in order for Al to pursue graduate study at UD.

Alan pursued many varied assignments during his career as a systems analyst and management consultant for Auerbach Associates, Ketron Associates, and GE Space and Missile Systems; he retired from GE in 1994. Al particularly enjoyed working on projects related to the development of alternative energy sources and state political redistricting.

Al was a lifelong sailor and tennis player; he owned a sailboat and enjoyed sailing the Chesapeake Bay with neighbors and friends. He was a longtime volunteer for and supporter of the Nature Conservancy and his homeowner's association. He is fondly remembered for his active sense of humor, his commitment to his community and to the environment, his love of the sea and sailing, and pursuit of victories in Internet chess. He was a steadfast, supportive, and loving husband and father who will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Alan was predeceased by his parents, wife, and brother, Cameron. He leaves to cherish his memory his three children, Nora of Wilmington (Stuart Spinner), Warren of Collegeville, PA (Mattie), and Nancy of Los Angeles, CA (Matthew Feely); two beloved granddaughters, Louisa Spinner and Ashlyn Mae Lewis; his sister, Dorothy Lewis of Hartford, CT; nieces Barbara Lewis of Madison, WI and Rebecca Lewis of Providence, RI, and their families; and his dear friend, June Roberts of Charleston, SC.

Al's family wishes to thank his many friends and neighbors at Owens Landing for their kindness and support, and the staff of Forwood Manor, Wilmington Hospital, and Compassionate Care for their care of Al.
