S. Bernard Ableman

Age 92, passed away, Saturday, January 17, 2015.

Born in Georgetown, DE, Nardy received his Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry from the University of Delaware in 1943; a degree in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University in 1944; attended Exeter University Law School in 1969 and received his Juris Doctor from Temple University School of Law in 1970. A proud U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

Nardy was very involved in the Delaware legal community. He served as a Delaware Magistrate from 1962 to 1965; partner at Connolly, Bove, Lodge & Hutz from 1970-1989; and of counsel at Biggs and Battaglia since 1990. Among other legal organizations, Nardy was a member of the Selden Society and the U.S. Supreme Court Historical Society. Outside of the legal community, some of Nardy's work was as an announcer for WDEL; a director at Affinity Wealth Management, Inc; and a member of the advisory board for the Dawn Career Institute.

His dedication to community service was clear through his work with Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation. Some of Nardy's work in Rotary was as President of the Rotary Club of Wilmington; District 7630 Governor; and Co-Chair of the North American Presidential Conference.

Nardy's commitment to Delaware was evident in his many roles, some of which were as chair of the Delaware Health Resources Board; member of the Prophets Club of Delaware; member of the Delaware Governor's Round Table; and member of the Editorial Board of the Wilmington News-Journal. Just recently, he was awarded the Order of the State by Governor Jack Markell - the highest service award in Delaware; he also received the John F. Newnam Rotary Service Award; the Rotary International Director's Lifetime Rotary Spirit Award; and the Greater Wilmington Distinguished Service Award.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Bertha Ableman; brother, Percival Ableman; and his sister, Marion Bereston. Nardy is survived by his wife of 36 years, Rosalie; children, Steven Ableman, Peggy Ableman Prendergast (Joseph), Susan Kline, and Michael Ableman (Jeanne-Marie); step-children, Richard Sigmund (Andrea) and Barbara Piper (Glenn); grandchildren, Aaron Ableman, Jordan Ableman, Mollie Ableman, Benjamin Ableman, David, Miriam and Tzriel; step-grandchildren, Holly Piper-Smith (Jeremiah), Wesley Piper (Jennifer), Kevin Sigmund (Chandra) and Cara Jay (Scott); great-grandchildren, Levy and Asher; step-great-grandchildren, Judah, Noah and Eva.

A memorial service will be held 12:30 pm, Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at Congregation Beth Emeth, 300 W. Lea Boulevard, Wilmington, DE 19802. Interment will be private. Shiva will be observed 7:30 pm Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at the Park Plaza Community Room, 1100 Lovering Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19806.
