Dr. V. Ernestine Moore-Crosland

Dr. Moore, aged 91, died October 10, 2013 at her home.

Born in St. Albans, WV to Ernest and Alma Griffith Moore, she as a young woman was active in the American Baptist Youth Fellowship, representing it on the state and national levels, as well as on a post World War II (1948) work project in Brittany, northern France.

She earned a BA from Marshall University, Huntington, WV in 1944, a master's in education (1946) from the University of Pittsburgh, and a doctorate in business education administration (1953) from New York University. Always eager to pursue learning, she did post-doctoral studies at Temple University in Philadelphia and Cambridge University in England. She also was graduated from John Robert Powers School for Models in New York City.

She taught at Dunbar (WV) High School, and was a professor at Rio Grande College (OH), Stephens College in Columbia, MO and New York University. She came to Wilmington in 1950 as supervisor of business education for the city schools. Three years later she became vice president for personnel for Wilmington Trust Co., leaving after 14 years to found Alma Moore College for adult women in Wilmington.

Dr. Moore was active in numerous religious, educational, professional, civic, cultural and eleemosynar organizations on the local, state and national levels. She loved to travel, which she did during her working years. Following retirement, she and her husband traveled extensively to many areas of the world.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Philip F. Crosland, former fine arts editor and theatre critic with the News Journal.
