Shirley R. Kratoska, 75, of Iowa City, died Monday, August 26, 2013 at Lantern Park Nursing & Rehab Center.

Private family graveside services will be held Thursday at Ames Municipal Cemetery in Ames, Iowa.

A memorial service will begin Saturday at 10:00 am at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Iowa City.

Instead of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Iowa City Hospice or The Free Lunch Program. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City is handling arrangements.

Shirley was born September 8, 1937 in Story County, Iowa, the daughter of James and Margaret (Munson) Elliott. Growing up in Story County, she graduated from high school and enrolled at Iowa State University - where she received her bachelor of science degree in home economics. Shirley met and married Richard "Dick" Kratoska in Ames on August 31, 1956. The couple moved to Iowa City in 1965 to work and raise their family.

She worked for the Iowa City Community School District at Iowa City High School for 25 years - retiring in 2000. While In retirement, Shirley subbed as a receptionist at both the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and the Iowa City Community School District.

Shirley was a long time member of St. Mark's Church, (SIA) Singles in Agriculture and regularly served at the Free Lunch Program. She volunteered at the Mercy Hospital Gift Shop and was a member of the Iowa Retired School Personnel Association

Survivors include her daughters, Becky Paine (Rick) of Houston, Texas and Julie Nessler (Randy) of Iowa City;

sisters, Maxine Baker of Windsor, California, Kathryn Yount of Dixon, Illinois, Sandra Thompson (Duane) of Kelley, Iowa and Norma Elliott of Nevada, Iowa, a brother, Tom Elliott (Barbara) of Slater, Iowa; and her grandchildren, Jennifer, Caitlyn, Kristen, Ian and Aaron.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1984 and an infant brother Richard.
