Foeller, Joseph L.

Joseph Leo Foeller, 96, a longtime Green Bay resident, recently of Sturgeon Bay, died peacefully Sunday, March 16, 2014, after a short illness. He was born September 29, 1917, in Green Bay to Joseph N. and Mary (Georger) Foeller. Joseph attended St. Norbert High School and College before graduating from Chicago Technical College. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945, stationed in New Guinea and Borneo with the amphibian engineers. Joseph completed over 70 combat landings and had 8 landing barges under his command. After returning from his service, he owned and operated Foeller Construction Co., a local commercial builder. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks Club.

On December 28, 1946, he married Jean McCallum at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Joseph enjoyed his cottage at Loon Lake, family camping on Moonlight Bay, golfing, bowling, deer hunting, skiing, and reading. He and Jean enjoyed travelling in the United States and Europe, including stays at 35 Elderhostels.

Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years, Jean Foeller; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Julie and Merritt Knox, Baileys Harbor; Kathleen and Tom Wilkolak, St. Paul, MN; Jeanine and Charles Evenson, Hayward; four grandchildren, Joseph (Elizabeth) Knox, Rebecca (Terry) Ullman, Amy (Morgan) Sheff, Lisa Wilkolak; seven great-grandchildren, Ruth and Eloise Knox, Joseph, Collette, Levi and Ruby Ullman, and Nora Sheff; a brother, Paul (Mary) Foeller; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters, Madge Vorwald, Louise Koeferl, Marie Rank, Josephine Dachelet; Rosalie and Katherine Foeller; two brothers, Martin and Andrew Foeller.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, March 21st, at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, 312 Victoria St., Green Bay. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at the church with Rev. Jose Antonio Castaneda officiating. Entombment will be in Allouez Chapel Mausoleum.
