Joseph Andrew Amon Obituary

Joseph Andrew Amon, age 96, died peacefully on October 26, 2014, at Millcreek Manor, surrounded by his loving family.

Joseph was born in Erie on May 1, 1918, the son of the late George Amon (a WWI veteran) and Catherine Anna (Fusz) Amon. He was a 1938 graduate of Academy High School, employed in sales at PA Meyers and Sons, until joining the Army in 1942. A member of the 79th infantry division Rangers 313th Company H APO 79, Joseph was deployed to Fjord of Clyde, Scotland, and landed on Omaha Red Beach, Normandy, France on June 6th, 1944. Wounded in action and a purple heart recipient, he was honorably discharged and married the love of his life, Rose Mary Kostur in January of 1946. Rose preceded him in death in 1990.

In 1983, Joseph retired from the American Sterilizer Company (AMSCO), after 43 years of employment as an assembler welder. In 2005, he retired from PNC Bank (formerly Marine Bank), as a courier. During his career as an assembler welder, he served as an instructor in the C.E.T.A. adult evening welding program at Technical Memorial High School. He was a member of Saint George Catholic Church and parish since 1953.

Joseph enjoyed every day of life! He sang in the Saint George Men's Choir and was a member of the Moniuszko Traveling Glee Club. He was a member of the Zukor, Moniuszko and Siebenbuerger Clubs, and the American Legion Post 571 Weslyvillle, Pa. His quick wit and wonderful sense of humor were attributes memorable to everyone he met. He deeply loved his family and made many friendships, even in his final years. His other interests included ballroom dancing, boating, bowling and travel.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sister Margaret Rygalski and brother John Amon.

He is survived by his proud children: daughters Cheryl Elizabeth Gies (husband Richard) of Maunee, Ohio and Jane Christine Tucker (husband Kevin) of Erie, and sons Joseph George Amon (wife Cynthia) of Hockessin, Delaware and Terrance Paul Amon of Erie.

He leaves ten grandchildren: Eric, Jerehmy, Frank, Jenna, Melissa, Christina, Joseph, Philip, Catherine and Sarah; thirteen great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews to honor his memory.

Friends may call on Thursday at the Francis V. Kloecker Funeral Home, Inc., 2502 Sassafras St., Erie, PA 16502, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and are invited to the Funeral Mass on Friday at Saint George Church at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, with full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Msgr. Franklin Endowment Fund, 5154 Peach St., Erie, PA 16509.

The family would like to thank Father Mike Polinek for his holy, spiritual ministry, Sue for home care, the professional and ancillary staff of the Millcreek Manor (precious angels) and Joshua and Holli of AsceraCare Hospice Services. Each of you cared for our father with the deepest sense of dignity and respect, and for that we are most grateful.
