Robert Preston White Sr. Obituary

Robert Preston White, Sr. passed away at his home at Buena Vida Estates in Melbourne, on February 24, 2013.

He is survived by his wife, Edythe Cox White; son, Robert Preston White, Jr. of Phoenix, Arizona; daughter, Alison M. White of Viera, Florida; and an extended family of stepchildren who treasured his presence in their lives.

He was born in Islip, New York on June 24, 1926 of Julian E. White, II and Lucille Smith. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy Amphibious Forces from 1943 to 1946, serving as a signalman on the DD-777 U.S.S. Zellars and the U.S.S. LST-30. At just 17 years old, he participated in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day.

He is preceded in death by his brothers, Julian E. White, III of California and Malcolm White of Michigan, veterans of the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy, respectively.

He moved to Satellite Beach in 1981, after living for several decades in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. He was most happy when sailing, and enjoyed extensive cruising in the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Bermuda and his beloved Indian River Lagoon. He was a proud member of the American Legion and was long bolstered by the friendship of his fellow "Grumpy Old Sailors" here in the Space Coast.

A memorial service will be held at Buena Vida Estates, 2129 West New Haven Avenue, Melbourne on Saturday, March 9 at 11:00 AM.

He will be interred in the South Florida National Cemetery with military honors. Florida Memorial Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.

His family knows that he is now free to spend all eternity in a sailor's heaven,
at the intersection of sky, sea, wind and sun.
