FREUND, GERHARD, MD
Gainesville - Gerhard Freund, MD, Full Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Neuroscience passed away at his home in Gainesville, FL on January 3, 2014 at the age of 88. Born in Frankfurt/Main Germany, he earned his medical degree from Goethe University Medical School in Frankfurt. His medical internship was in Ottawa, Canada followed by residencies in Internal Medicine at the University of Illinois in Chicago. He then served a fellowship in Endocrinology at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He entered private practice in medicine in Chicago and joined the faculty of the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois. In 1963 he became a faculty member of the Department of Medicine of the University of Florida College of Medicine. He received a joint faculty appointment in the Department of Neuroscience in 1967. His activities included teaching, medical practice and laboratory research. Dr. Freund developed the first animal model of alcohol addiction. He was Co-Director of the University of Florida Alcohol Research Center.
Dr. Freund was a Diplomat and Fellow of the American College of Physicians and Chief of the Endocrinology Service of the Veterans Administration Medical Center. He was selected for American Men and Women of Science and Who's Who in Science and Engineering. After his retirement from clinical activities he continued his laboratory research as Professor Emeritus. He published a personal memoir about his life entitled- 'The Sun Kept Rising: Adventures of an Immigrant'.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years Marion Healy Freund, daughter Dr. Anne Freund (Mr. Gregory Bakeman) of Sonoma, CA and son Dr. Michael Freund (Dr. Cecilia Basic) of Winnipeg, Canada, and two grandchildren Amy Rubin and Christopher Freund.
