Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Medcalf, 97, widow of George Alexander Medcalf, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2013.

Born in Cusseta, Georgia, she was one of five children of the late Mortimer W. and Susie Burgamy Weems. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Mrs. Medcalf was a graduate of the Medical College of VA, School of Nursing, and received her B.S. in Public Health Nursing from the University of Michigan.

She was a member of that "Greatest Generation" and honorably served in WW II as a First Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. During her nursing career, Mary worked at Emory University Hospital and later taught nursing at University Hospital School of Nursing in Augusta, GA. In 1997 she and her husband relocated to Rolling Green Village in Greenville and was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her loving family, son, Dr. Michael Medcalf and wife, Donna of Greenville; daughter, Barbara Long and husband, Col.(Ret.) Barry Long of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren, Major David Long, Michael Long, Scott Long, Bradford Medcalf and Abbey Cooler; 9 great-grandchildren. She was also predeceased by a great-grandson, Robert Michael Medcalf.

Services will be Friday, April 5, 2013 at 11:00am at The Mackey Mortuary with the Reverend Dr. John Brearley officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Woodlawn. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, 15 Oregon Street, Greenville, SC 29605.

The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at NHC Greenville for their love and care.
