Cheryl Czarnaty Shirley, 48, wife of Kevin Shirley, of Old Lyme, passed away peacefully with family at her side after a long battle with leukemia. Cheryl was a dedicated, focused, and fun loving person who touched the lives of anyone she came into contact with. Cheryl would do anything once (even skydive), however what she loved the most was boating, cooking, going to the gym, reading, visiting Disney as well as family in Florida, trips to St. Martin, spending time with her daschunds, and exploring great wineries and restaurants with family and friends. Cheryl was also very career oriented. After graduating Bentley University in 1991 with a Bachelor in accounting, she began her career at CIGNA; through multiple promotions over nine years at CIGNA, her last position was Manager of Health Plan Financial Operations. Cheryl passed her CPA (on her first attempt) in 2000 and took advantage of this accomplishment to move into the field of not for profit continuing care. She first moved to Duncaster in Bloomfield as Controller and Director of Financial Operations. From there she transitioned to Jefferson House in Newington as Director of Finance and Business Operations. Most recently Cheryl was the Chief Financial Officer of Mary Wade Home in Fairhaven. In addition, she was the President of the Association of Long Term Care Financial Managers. Cheryl was predeceased by her grandparents and her father Frederick J Czarnaty. Beside her husband Kevin, she leaves her mother, Laura Czarnaty of Englewood, FL, her sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Mark Mecca of Port Charlotte, FL, her aunt and uncle, Jo Ann and Brian Thomas of Port Charlotte, FL, aunt and uncle, Patricia and Bob Di Donno of Punta Gorda, FL, and her aunt, Shirley Lucas of Newington. From husband Kevin's side, Cheryl is also survived by his parents Maureen and Edgar Shirley of Wethersfield, sister and brother-in-law, Lynda and Scott King of Newington, sister, Lisa Fisher, and her twin daughters Kelsey and Morgan of Vernon, along with numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins on both sides. Funeral services for Cheryl will be Friday, September 28th, DIRECTLY at Sacred Heart Church, 158 Broad St., New Britain, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. She will be laid to rest in Sacred Heart Cemetery following mass. Family and friends may call at the NEWINGTON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 20 Bonair Ave, Newington, on Thursday, September 27, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Donations can be made to the Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford, CT. 06405. Dearest Kevin and Family, I knew Cheryl from the Marina and every time I saw her she was smiling, even when she wasn't feeling her best. I will always remember her smile was as bright as the sun. May your wonderful memories of Cheryl bring you comfort during this time of sorrow and remember her smile for it will light up the darkness. God Bless
