Monica Hofmann, 77, of North Granby, CT. beloved wife for 58 years of John Wright Hofmann, Jr., passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 4, 2019, surrounded by her family at St. Francis Hospital. Born in England on June 14, 1941, daughter of the late Howard and Magdalena (Braam) Smelter, she arrived at the age of four to the United States, growing up in Bristol, CT. After graduating high school, Monica attended Quinnipiac College before marrying her husband on June 25, 1960. The young couple moved to Granby in 1971 and ultimately purchased the Cedar Ledge Farm where they raised their children and spent many happy years. Onceher children were in school, Monica took a position at Cigna Insurance Company where she enjoyed a successful career of over 30 years until her retirement in 1996 as an operations manager. In her spare time, she enjoyed caring for the horses on her farm, gardening, baking and enjoying her family. She was a self-taught pianist and could play almost anything by ear, beautifully. Always active, Monica loved the outdoors, hiking, and taking on a variety of home projects. Most of all, Monica will be remembered as the matriarch of her family, who lived life to the fullest. Besides her husband, she leaves two children, John Hofmann, III and his wife Ivette of Tewksbury, MA, and Lisa Anne Hofmann-Brunelle of Granby, CT.; four grandchildren, Francie Marshall and her husband James of Danvers, MA, Ashley Hofmann and her significant other, Sal Basile of Cambridge, MA, Stacy Brunelle and her husband Christopher Bourbeau of Granby, CT and Michael Brunelle of Granby, CT; three great-grandchildren, Ava, Gavin, and Jordyn; a brother, Roland Smelter and his wife Nancylee of Ohio; two nephews, Phillip and Timothy Smelter; and a niece, Gretchen Smelter. Her family will receive friends on Thursday, May 9, 5-7 p.m., at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby. Burial will be private in Granby Cemetery.
