Walter E. Russell

Walter Earle Russell, 91, of Suffield, formerly of Windsor, CT and Ludlow, VT, passed away on October 11, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Granby, to Emily Kelley Russell and Earle Stone Russell. Doc, as he was known, graduated from Windsor High School in 1945, played baseball with the Hartford Twilight League and was scouted by the major leagues. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a pitcher. He graduated from Colby College in Waterville, ME with a degree in mathematics in 1953, after serving in the Army as a paratrooper in the 101st Division. Walt began his career at Hartford National Bank as a teller and there met the love of his life, Cynthia Gay Johnson. His banking career progressed to Windsor Branch Manager and eventually to Vice President. In 1976, he was asked by the Windsor Republican Town Committee to run for Probate Judge. He ran and won, served as Probate Judge, and ran unopposed in subsequent elections until he retired in 1991. Walt was also a member of the Windsor Library Association and the Windsor Club, Chairman of the First School Society, and served on the Charter Revision Committee and the Board of Windsor Federal Savings & Loan. In 1971, he and Cynthia purchased "The Little White Cottage" on the Black River in Ludlow, VT which they painstakingly winterized and remodeled, by themselves, over several years. Every weekend they went to VT, skiing Round Top Mountain or Okemo in the winter, kayaking Round Pond and Lake Rescue in the summer, and enjoying the company of many good friends. Walter was a master woodworker and crafted most of the furniture in his home. Although Walter might have been content to stay home and read the paper and watch sports on TV, he dutifully accompanied Cynthia on trips to western Europe, Egypt and Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, visiting friends in Arizona and more. Walter was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Windsor, and there served faithfully as treasurer for 33 years. He was known for his keen intellect, wry wit, excellent manhattans and blueberry pancakes. Walter is survived by his wife, Cynthia Johnson Russell, his daughters Allyson Davis and husband Damien of Avon, Kelley Scott and husband Richard of Enfield, Jennifer Benson and husband Brad of Granby, son Robert Russell and fiancée Cynthia Lawlor of Bloomfield, grandchildren Ashley Rhodes and husband Paul, Elisabete Fox and husband Seth, Emily Perrottet and husband Michael, Ana Arruabarrena, Nicholas Russell and wife Courtney, Hannah Davis, Julia Benson, Alexandra Benson and granddaughter-in-law Caitlin Davis. Walter also leaves his eight great-grandchildren Sydney and Scarlett Fox, Emma, Greyson and Liam Rhodes, Alden Davis, Logan Russell and Adeline Perrottet. He was predeceased by his beloved grandson Andrew Walker Davis and his siblings Antoinette Cole Russell and Edward Stone Russell. His family is grateful to the staff at Suffield by the River who took compassionate care of him over the last few years. Walter's family will receive friends on Monday October 14, 2019 from 5-8 PM at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Avenue, Windsor, CT.
