Joseph Jeswald Obituary
May 17, 1927 - March 21, 2009
Joseph "Joe" Jeswald, 81, of Sarasota, formerly of Beverly, Mass., died March 21, 2009.
There will be visitation or services.
Survivors include his wife, Hester of Sarasota; sons Peter of Conway, Mass., and Paul of Pawtucket, R.I.; a daughter, Melissa Dec of Boxford, Mass.; a brother, Tom of Chicago.
He studied in Paris at Academy Julien and with Fernard Leger. His career began in New York City with many exhibitions over the years. His work is in major public and private collections, including Hirshhorn, Rockefeller Foundation and Roy M. Neuberger Museum.
In 1969, he founded Montserrat College of Art in Beverly and served as president until 1985, when he returned to full-time painting.
He and his wife moved to Sarasota in 1992, where he continued painting until his death.

Thank you to all who wrote here about Joe. He was a very special guy and it's nice to hear from those of you who recognized this. I appreciate it.
You might want to know that he was painting all through his illness and right up until the end.

A wonderful person who could see the potential and share with others, especially myself, the chance to grow as a person and as an artist. I am very fortunate to have known him.

As he must have done with so many , Mr Jeswald saw something in me on our very first meeting and gave me a the opportunity to discover my real purpose.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Joe's death. My condolences to Hester and her family. I feel honored to have known Joe as a teacher, mentor, and friend. He was a wonderful voice at times when I most needed wise advice. We are fortunate to have the legacy of his vision live on in his artwork.
