She graduated from San Jacinto High School and from Rice University with distinction, earning a B.A. in philosophy at 19. Together with her husband Hershel, she owned and managed Phil Rich Fan Manufacturing Co. Upon selling the company, at 55, she became a travel agent. She proceeded to buy and operate Rainbow Tours and Travel. This company merged and later became Griffin Americas, where she worked as an active agent until her death.

She served on multiple non-profit boards including Houston Metropolis Ministries, Jewish Family Service, Jewish Community Center, Temple Emanu El, The Jewish Federation of Greater Houston, and the National Board of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS). Three times she was a delegate to the Reconstituted Jewish Agency in Israel and served on the International Committee of the Greater Houston Partnership. She was President of Brandeis Women's Committee in Houston and on the National Board of Brandeis Women. Hilda loved to travel, visit with friends, play bridge and mah jong, and talk about her grandchildren. With her family, she was often philosophical, sharing her personal values and world views.
