Jack Alton Mellenthin was born in Riverside, California to Albert and Emma Mellenthin. Jack spent his childhood years in Kelseyville California. He learned to be self-sufficient as his mother died when he was 7 and the country was in the midst of the great depression.
Jack graduated at the top of his class in High School joined the Navy and attended The University of Texas at Austin. While at UT Jack played football, was on the swim team and played trumpet in the marching band. Jack graduated with a degree in Aerospace engineering. He became an officer and toured the pacific on the USS Lexington toward the end of WW II.
He took a job with NASA in 1948 at Ames Research Center in Mt. View Ca. Over the years Jack worked on projects such as; The Apollo Missions, The B-1 Bomber, the SST Concord, and the Space Shuttle.
He met Rosalyn Shook on a blind date in 1957 and they were married in 1961. Jack and Rose were blessed with two children Linda and Michael. Jack was always very active in the family's church in Redwood City. He also enjoyed spending time fishing and camping with his family and his annual Yosemite pack trip with his buddies.
The family moved to Nampa, Idaho in 1977 after Jacks early retirement from NASA. Jack quickly became bored with retirement and took employment at Nampa High as the athletic facilities janitor. Jack and Rose also became very involved at Christian Faith Center, where he was a member until his passing. Jack loved gardening and spending time outdoors. Jack played basketball competitively well into his 70's and participated in the Senior Olympics in Boise. Jack was a familiar face at the Nampa Senior center where he sang in the choir and made many friends. He enjoyed watching his grandkids play sports and attend their music performances.
Jack is celebrating a glorious homecoming in Heaven with his wife Rose, his parents and countless friends and family, and his Savior Jesus.
Jack leaves behind Linda and Peter Weiss with Dominik, Rebecca, Chantal, Ben, Stefan and Michael and Toddi Mellenthin with Jacob and Arianna.
We want to express our heart-felt gratitude to Cheryl Grimes who was Moms, and then Dads care-giver for 10 years. You are family Cheryl.
