James "Jim" Thomas
July 31, 1934 - August 19, 2014
James (Jim) Thomas, 80 years old of Marsing, ID passed away August 19, 2014 at Ashley Manor Care Center.
Jim was born July 31, 1934 in Grand Forks, ND to Rosa and Harvey Thomas. He graduated from Lakewood Park Bible School in 1956 in Devils Lake, ND. He joined the Army on July 9, 1959 and was stationed in Minneapolis, MN. Later to be transferred to Presidio of Monterey in California; where he studied to be a voice interceptor of the Polish language. He was also studying to be a pastor for the Assembly of God. He was later stationed in Germany for one and one half years when he received an honorable discharge.
After the Army, Jim was a manager of the Woolworth Store in Bay Fail Mall in San Leandro, CA. Jim later decided to become a long haul truck driver for NACA Trucking in Ontario. This brought Jim to the Idaho area where he met Jo Ann Nichols. In 1976 they married and raised their daughter, Sarah. He continued driving truck until 1980 when he went to work for Gustafsons Chemical in Marsing until he retired in 2007. Dad loved working at the plant; it kept him home to be with his family. Dad would often ride his bike to work to keep him young and loved the community of Marsing. He held two terms as a councilman and ran for Mayor of Marsing.
In 1996, the absolute joy of his life was born. Abbigale (Punkin) had her Papa wrapped around her little finger since day one. They were the best of buddies; two peas in a pod. As Abbi got older, they were always outside. You could always find Dad doing his job as a beer tender at the Percifield Co-ed Tournament. Dad poured beer for 25 years. You may have ordered only one beer but dad would talk you into two beers, or a raffle ticket, play cards and of course the loser bought the beer. Dad worked at St. Chapelle Winery during the summers for the Jazz Concerts with Sarah. He was an avid bowler, loved to read, camp and go to music concerts and the rodeos, especially the Caldwell Night Rodeo. He loved summer vacations with the family. After retiring from Gustafson's, Dad drove a fertilizer truck for Simplot for two seasons. His grandkids were the joy of his life. He loved going to all their sporting events. You would look up and here comes Dad to watch Robert play football. He sat many hours in a gym to watch the girls play volleyball. He was their biggest fan.
Dad is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and one brother. He is survived by his wife, Jodi; daughter, Sarah and son-in-law, Bob; grandchildren, Abbigale, Robert and Jessica.
A celebration of life will be held at the American Legion Hall at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 22, 2014. Services are under the direction of Cremation Society of Idaho. www.cremationsociety-idaho.com.
