Joseph "Joedy" Becker
July 7, 1938 - March 5, 2014
Joseph (Joedy) Delano Becker, 75, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2014, in Pocatello, Idaho, after battling many years with multiple health issues. Family and friends were amazed and inspired by Joedy's courage and tenacity. Born to Dessie and Joseph W. Becker on July 7, 1938, in Johnstown, Colorado, Joedy spent his childhood in Colorado and Salt Lake City, Utah, with his mother and stepfather, Dessie and Jack Ball. He graduated from West Jordan High School, attended the University of Utah, and then served with the Utah Air National Guard.
On May 20, 1961, Joedy married Karen Johnson of Pocatello. Though separated after many years of marriage, they remained friends and enjoyed wonderful times with their children and grandchildren. He was very proud of and so loved his children and their families. Joedy was passionate about ensuring his grandchildren receive a college education. He loved socializing with everyone and could tell one entertaining story after another; he definitely possessed the "gift to gab."
Joedy started his career in the grocery business in Salt Lake City, continuing in this business after moving to Pocatello. He also worked for the Idaho State Journal selling advertising. In the early 1960's, Joedy and his father-in-law Albert "Bud" Johnson purchased and operated a highly successful business, Modern Roofing and Insulation. Joedy served as president of the Western States Roofing Association and received numerous achievement awards throughout his career.
As a longtime member of the Pocatello Elks Club, Joedy served as Exalted Ruler. His involvement and membership in other organizations included the Jaycees, the Greater Pocatello Chamber of Commerce and Juniper Hills Country Club. He loved Idaho State University sporting events and was an ardent supporter of the Bengal Booster Club. Joedy pursued an active life in community service and social circles of Pocatello. He had a very generous heart as evidenced by his contributions and dedication to many worthwhile causes in the community.
Joedy and Marva Ward, his loving companion, enjoyed golfing and spending winters at their home in Mesquite, Nevada. His family is grateful to Marva for the care given to Joedy through some difficult times as his health declined. Joedy was an avid and accomplished bowler as a younger man. He loved spending time on golf courses as well as traveling for pleasure.
Joedy is survived by his companion Marva; daughters Andrea (Robert) Batts of Franklin, TN; Monica (Marc) Delrosario of Long Beach, CA; and Dana (Peter) Roloff of San Diego, CA; his spouse Karen Becker of Pocatello, ID; daughter-in-law Heather Becker of Meridian, ID; grandchildren Logan and Alexa Batts, Madison and Mason Delrosario, Jane and Elena Roloff, and Kodi and Kyli Becker; brothers Russ (Joyce) Becker and Steve (Kristine) Ball and sister Patricia O'Conner as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Joedy was preceded in death by his son Ladd and his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at Downard Funeral Home, 241 N. Garfield Avenue, Pocatello, Idaho. In addition, visitation will be Tuesday, March 11, 2014, from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home.
